Place of origin: Oberegg (AI), Switzerland

Julia Berger, born in 2002, is enthusiastic about the interdisciplinarity of theatre and the fusion of text and movement. With a great passion for acting, dance (jazz/contemporary) and singing (soloist/vocal composition), she researches forms in space, the power of sound and silence, nearness and distance.

At the age of fifteen, Julia Berger enrichened her education in a six-month student exchange programme in Bedford (UK), where she took theatre, dance and music lessons at Kimberley College. Back in Switzerland, she played her first professional role at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich at the age of seventeen (Alina in ‘Greta’ by Suna Gürler and Lucien Haug, directed by Suna Gürler). During this time, she also wrote, choreographed and staged a physical theatre piece (‘in between’, for three actors), which was recognised as outstanding at its premiere in 2019 at the Kantonsschule Wetzikon.

This was followed by a one-year internship and basic training in ‘BuT theatre pedagogy’ at the Tempus fugit theatre in Lörrach (D), courses in film studies and philosophy at the University of Zurich, works with the group «young lab» from Grande Giro and assistant directing positions with directors Recha La Dous and Sabrina Lössl.
In the autumn of 2023, Julia Berger began studying physical theatre at the Dimitri Theatre Academy. Making theatre in and outside of Verscio (like the piece «baum.fällt» together with Benjamin Koch for the festival gARTen in Lugano), she is discovering new passions such as acrobatics and poetry and enjoys her time in the mountains of Ticino.

As a politically engaged person, her works always refer to the present and play with expectations and associations. The themes are diverse and range from loneliness to menstruation. They are united by a desire to think broadly. Sometimes with poetic imagery, sometimes with an uncompromised directness, but always with a great love of play, she creates touching works.
